T.P. Flanagan RHA Born 1929
T.P. Flanagan was born in Enniskillen in 1929 and studied at the Belfast College of Art from 1949-53. In 1954 he began teaching at St. Mary’s College of Education and remained there for 28 years, eventually becoming Head of the Art Department. Flanagan’s first solo show was held at CEMA, Belfast in 1961 and he also exhibited on a regular basis with the Hendriks Gallery, Dublin and Tom Caldwell in Belfast in the 1970’s and 80’s. He has participated in many mixed exhibitions, including Four Ulster Painters at the Arnolfini Gallery, Bristol (1965), Two Irish Painters (with Colin Middleton) at the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry, (1968) and included in The Gordon Lambert Collection Exhibitions held at the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, Dublin (1972) and the Ulster Museum (1976). Internationally, Flanagan has shown with the Armstrong Gallery, New York (1986) and Concept Gallery, Pittsburgh. A retrospective of his work from 1967-77 was held at the Arts Council of Northern Ireland in 1977. Flanagan’s work is represented in the collections of Ulster Museum, The Arts Councils of Ireland & Northern Ireland, Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, Dublin, Irish Museum of Modern Art, and the National Self-Portrait Collection, Limerick.
